Do You Overpronate or Supinate? Here’s How to Tell — and What Shoes to Wear

When it comes to foot comfort, what’s happening under your feet matters more than you think. Whether you're walking around the block, chasing kids at home, or running miles, your foot movement pattern—also known as your gait—plays a major role in your overall comfort, posture, and even injury risk.

Two of the most common gait issues are overpronation and supination. But what do they really mean? And how can the right footwear help?

Let’s break it down.

Understanding Pronation and Supination

What is Pronation?

Pronation is the natural inward roll of your foot as it lands while walking or running. It helps absorb shock and evenly distribute weight.

Most people pronate slightly — and that’s totally normal.

What is Overpronation?

Overpronation means your foot rolls inward too much, causing your arch to collapse. This can put extra strain on your knees, hips, and back.

Signs of Overpronation:

  • Collapsing arches or “flat feet”

  • Uneven shoe wear (inside edge worn out)

  • Frequent ankle sprains or shin splints

What is Supination?

Supination, or underpronation, is when your foot rolls outward as it lands. It usually happens when someone has high arches and the weight stays along the outside edge of the foot.

Signs of Supination:

  • High arches that don’t flatten when standing

  • Shoe wear mostly on the outer edge

  • Frequent ankle rolling, foot strain, or plantar fasciitis

How to Tell What Foot Type You Have

1. Try the Wet Foot Test

  • Wet your feet and stand on a piece of cardboard or paper.

  • Check the footprint:

    • Full footprint with little curve = Overpronation

    • Normal arch with a clear curve = Neutral

    • Thin connection or no arch at all = Supination

2. Inspect Your Shoes

  • Inside edge worn = Overpronation

  • Outside edge worn = Supination

  • Even wear = Neutral gait
